Embrace Your Uniqueness

Why Weird is Actually Your Superpower

Being different—or, dare I say, weird—often gets a bad rap. It's associated with standing out, not fitting the mould, and drawing attention in ways that can feel uncomfortable. People stare, point out your quirks, or quietly distance themselves.

We learn early on that being different isn't always easy.

And there's a reason for that. Historically, being cast out from the group could mean serious danger. In early human societies, to be separated from your tribe often meant having to fend for yourself, finding food, shelter, and safety alone. Our brains haven't forgotten that.

Even today, in a far less cutthroat world, that primal fear still lingers. We avoid standing out for fear of judgment, disapproval, or rejection. We try to blend in, be liked, and avoid being seen as "too much" or "not enough."

But the reality is that being different is your greatest strength in business.

Look around, online and offline, in every industry. So many businesses are playing by the same rules, using the same language, and following the same trends. It's like watching sheep trail after the same shepherd, hoping that sticking together will keep them safe.

But this creates a universal problem: you blend in when you follow the crowd. And when you blend in, your customers can't find you.

You can't stand out by sounding, looking, and behaving like everyone else.

The remedy? Own what makes you different and channel your uniqueness into everything you do.

I love stories to explain concepts, and you'll find me creating fictional businesses to use as examples, like these two, to show how being different is a superpower.

The Beige Graphic Designer

Lorraine is a freelance graphic designer. Her website looks like every other design site with muted beige tones, trendy serif fonts, and copy that says things like "helping purpose-driven brands stand out." She posts now and then on Instagram, but nothing reveals who she is, what she cares about, or what makes her different. She's talented, but people scroll past her without remembering a thing.

The Punk Rock Graphic Designer

Sabrina is also a graphic designer, but she leans into her love of punk rock, bold colours, and hand-drawn elements. Her tagline? "Design that doesn't behave." Her website plays music when you land on it (optional, of course), her About page reads like a love letter to rule-breakers, and her posts show her process's messy, brilliant behind-the-scenes. She's booked out months in advance.

The two businesses have exactly the same skillset but a completely different impact.

What is the difference between the two?

Authenticity, Clarity and Courage.

How to Embrace Your Uniqueness

Instead of hiding the things that make you different, start celebrating them. Talk about them. Share your story. Let your quirks, style, and values show up in your branding, offers, copy, and presence.

Whether it's how you speak, package your services, or connect with your community- do more of it. People are hungry for authenticity, and your uniqueness is the most authentic thing you have.

When you stop trying to fit in, you also permit others to do the same, and when you do that, you don't just attract attention—you attract the right people. Your people. The ones who get you and who need what you offer.

There's no one else like you. That's not a flaw but your superpower.
